The first crude oil assay in INA was created in 1977. Over the period from 1977 to 1990 the laboratory has been continuously working on the characterization of crude oils from around the world. Since 2010 over 100 crude oil assays according to different customers requirements were made.

Central testing laboratory is equipped with two laboratory distillation units, an atmospheric (eng. Total Boling Point (TBP)) and a vacuum distillation unit (eng. Vacuum Potstill). These units are used for crude oil distillation and evaluation and also for the distillation of mixtures of two or more petroleum products with boiling points above 150 ° C.                


TBP distillation unit, which is used according to the ASTM D2892 standard, has the following characteristics:
  • Sample volume: 6 - 14 L (flask volume is 20 L)
  • 15 theoretical trays
  • Maximum temperature: 370 °C
  • Cuts can be taken for every 5 °C (99 sections)
  • Cuts can be defined by the temperature or volume
  • Two vacuum ranges

Vacuum Potstill

Vacuum Potstill distillation unit is used for distillation of heavier fractions with boiling points above 150 °C. Potstill distillation unit is used according to ASTM D5236 standard. The distillation unit has the following features:
  • Sample volume: 2 - 4 L (flask volume is 6 L)
  • Maximum temperature: 550 °C
  • Pressure: 1 - 0,2 mmHg
  • Cuts can be taken for every 5 ° C (60 sections)
  • Cuts can be defined by the temperature or volume
Both distillation units have temperature, pressure and distillation speed control and are fully automatic and flexible. Their advantage is that the data from the atmospheric and vacuum distillation can be merged and converted into one distillation curve along the entire distillation area from 15 to 550 °C.

  • CTL is unique because of possibility of preparing complete crude oil assays. Crude oil distillation units are completely automated with maximal flexibility, which can meet all needs of clients.
  • CTL can determine the efficiency of refining catalysts and adsorbents, by measuring particle specific surface area, pore volume, pore size distribution and microactivity.
  • Laboratory can determine effectiveness of additives for improving low temperature and application properties of diesel fuel and compatibility of additives
  • In the field of water testing, CTL can analyze different samples of water from the oil industry, such as layered and drilling water.
  • CTL can determine scale inhibitor efficiency
  • CTL analyzes solid samples by NMR spectroscopy and all types of hydrocarbon samples by comprehensive gas chromatography GCxGC
  • CTL is one of the few laboratories which analyzes mercury content in water and oil samples
