Virje, 24 May 2023 – By ceremonially launching the Virje solar power plant INA becomes a commericial electricity producer, thus reaffirming its commitment to the transition to renewable energy sources. The opening of the solar power plant was attended by state and local government officials, representatives of KONČAR, HEP and INA’s Supervisory and Management Board members.

INA’s solar power plant in Virje is the second-largest solar power plant in Croatia, with an installed capacity of 10,2 MW and a connection capacity of 9 MW. It is equipped with 18,670 solar panels. The plant is expected to produce 12,225 MWh of electricity annually, which will be supplied to the grid. When the second solar power plant – Sisak solar power plant – which INA is currently building, begins operation in the coming months, INA will annually deliver about 16,000 MWh of electricity from renewable sources to the power grid, i.e. enough to cover the average annual consumption of cities such as Makarska or Jastrebarsko.

By putting our first solar power plant into operation, we are making history at INA and taking a step towards a greener and more sustainable future of our business. INA is making significant efforts to upgrade the traditional value chain with various profitable renewable energy projects. We are also planning to put our solar power plant in Sisak into operation, and I believe that soon we will also celebrate INA’s successes in geothermal energy. We want to be among the first to produce green hydrogen for the market, continue developing projects for the permanent storage of carbon dioxide in our oil fields, which we have been implementing for almost a decade, and explore the potential of wind energy on the Adriatic. INA can successfully tackle green challenges and contribute to achieving the sustainability goals of the European Union and the Republic of Croatia, as demonstrated by our projects”, said INA Management Board President Péter Ratatics at the opening of the solar power plant.

Darko Koren, Koprivnica-Križevci County Prefect, said: “Koprivnica-Križevci County supports and welcomes investments in the energy sector, especially in renewable energy sources, and we congratulate INA on this historic achievement in electricity production, as well as the Municipality of Virje, which is now home to the second-largest solar power plant in Croatia. It is important to emphasize the successful cooperation of the Municipality, the County and INA for over 40 years, which has had an extremely positive effect on the development of the local community and the improvement of the standard of living of the locals, and thus on the overall development of the entire area of the county. I wish everyone involved great success in their work.”

The design and construction of the Virje solar power plant took about a year, and the power plant was built for INA by the local company KONČAR – Inženjering which was selected in an international competition. The power plant features KONČAR’s equipment and software domestically produced in CroatiaThe same company is also responsible for constructing INA’s solar power plant in Sisak.

This success further demonstrates KONČAR’s competence in the realization of complex EPC projects as we utilized the latest technological solutions during the construction of the power plants, including our PROZA NET platform, the backbone of plant digitalization. I would like to thank our partners from INA for recognizing this and for placing their trust in us, enabling us to jointly provide valuable new references for the further development of this important business segment, important for the successful implementation of the green transition“, said the President of the KONČAR Management Board, Gordan Kolak.

INA’s foray into renewable energy sources is part of the company’s development guidelines, which are aligned with MOL Group’s Shape Tomorrow 2030+ strategy, in which INA plays an important role.
